When I asked my husband if he knew the meaning of this question he replied, “Well, you are either speaking of your spiritual covering, or what you wear.” He was right on both accounts, and when I started to think of this question I saw it just unfolding in a very natural way.
Simply put, how we choose to cover our bodies speaks volumes to others about how we view our worthiness. As believing women the question then becomes, do we bring glory to God through the intentionality of our choice of dress? If we do, be assured that it will not go unnoticed. Likewise, it has little to do with how much money we spend, or how deep our pockets happen to be, and everything to do with clothing ourselves with dignity and honor. It is that dignity and honor that will come forth from our very being, and we will not be able to hide it.
Yesterday, while looking at a magazine my eyes were drawn to an article about clothing, and one sentence was perfect to what I feel is true here. It said, “Getting dressed is the beginning of one’s conversation with the world.” Such is the statement we make with the clothes we wear, not about labels that other women might envy, but our substance underneath.
Just for the record, I really like clothes that are beautiful and of the highest quality, but for me if my motivation for choosing them is not sound, then it is like putting makeup on a face that has not been cleansed beforehand, and that is never good.
I want to have the freedom to dress in a way that speaks of my individuality, and I want to be confident that I am not misunderstood, but I do not want to dress for others approval. This then becomes my responsibility as I consider what my covering is saying, and that it is in agreement with who I am.
I can tell you who I am not. I am not who the world says I am, not in who they say I can become, or who I should be. I never want to be confused or misled by those perspectives.
I think there is so much more that is noteworthy to say on this subject, and revisiting it at a later date would be good for us all.
Proverbs 31:25 NKJ says, "Strength and honor are her clothing; she shall rejoice in time to come."
Since I mentioned the spiritual covering in the beginning, let me just say that as believing women we not only look to covering our physical bodies, we place the highest level of importance on being spiritually covered. Knowing that God protects us, and that He carries out His responsibilities for us with the utmost care, should give us undeniable security.
