When I think of the voice of God, I do imagine that it is thundering. To think of His voice in any other way just doesn't seem to work for me. Even when I know how tender He is to me personally, He remains powerfully expressive and uncontainable. How can we ever put the voice of God, the Creator of heaven and earth in a box that we have fashioned! Not possible, right?
As I am writing this today a thunderstorm has just gone through our area. It was indeed thundering and uncontainable. The rain was torrential, and while its beating on the roof was intense, it was mild in comparison to the rumbling of the thunder. It made me grateful for the assurance that I was in a house that would keep me safe.
As I think of being safe, I wonder how often we think that God is not safe? It is not a thought that I regularly ponder, as I prefer to see Him as approachable and comforting. Of course, God is that and much more, but He is also a Force that is mighty. His is the voice that is not containable, one that is likened to the ocean waves. Waves that we love to play in on the beach, but with power enough to destroy as a tsunami.
Here now is where my comfort lies. That Power that can create galaxies, is the same Power that creates the unborn child in the womb. That Power that will one day create a new heaven and a new earth, is the same Power that collects my tears. That Power that could unleash destruction on a sinful world, is the same Power that is compassionate and long-suffering.
My heart tells me that I am loved by my Father, and that His voice is not one I run from, but run towards.
Psalm 29:3 NLT The voice of the LORD echoes above the sea. The God of glory thunders. The LORD thunders over the mighty sea.
