This is a question that came up recently when I was having a conversation with my husband. We were talking about how God calls us into different seasons in our spiritual walk, and how those seasons have us utilizing what the Lord has prepared us to do. It is during this time that the Holy Spirit will bring things full circle, and it is the precious revelation that the Spirit of God has released into our spirit that must be brought forth.
When heaven calls we will want to answer. As believers we long to be used by God in His kingdom. We know that the things of heaven are not just for us, but are meant to bring its reality into the lives of many. We may walk in the natural, but it is in knowing that our spiritual connection is influenced by our heavenly connection to Jesus that is life transforming. And nothing of power in God’s kingdom is done without the power of the Holy Spirit who brings us into all the truth that we need.
If we were to put heaven side by side with the world’s view we would see a clear distinction. The two will never be in agreement. We chose sides when we said yes to salvation. The Bible makes it very clear in the Scriptures when it asks in James 4:4-5 NKJV, “Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Whoever therefore wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God. Or do you think that the Scripture says in vain, “The Spirit who dwells in us yearns jealously?”
I know this is strong language, and we might have a tendency to ask the question, “But certainly not all things in this world are evil?” I think that the answer is really rather simple. God does not want to be our second choice, and He certainly does not want us to share the affection that is meant for Him alone, with anyone or anything. This applies to all that He has created in this world for us to enjoy and discover. These things are meant to enhance our understanding of our Creator, not take His place in our hearts.
Heaven’s call is not selective, but actively working in our lives each time that we take a breath. We are meant to see that our natural life exists here but for a moment, and that our real eternal life is heaven bound. In seeing this distinction, our walk will be purpose driven to help others to see that the veil was torn and that we have access to our heavenly home, even as we exist on planet earth.
Matthew 27:51 NKJV Then, behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom; and the earth quaked, and the rocks were split.
2 Peter 1:10 CSB Therefore, brothers, make every effort to confirm your calling and election, because if you do these things you will never stumble.
