I think that most of us know the Scripture in Proverbs 23:7 that says, “For as he thinks in his heart, so is he,” and yet I wonder if we really believe this in the literal sense. Yesterday, I listened to an excellent teaching on this exact point. Here is the question with a bit more clarity. Are we allowing our thoughts to change our life for the better, or are our thoughts proving to be toxic to our life?
I think that often our thoughts become the result of what others speak to us. If you grew up in a home where you were celebrated, where peace abounded, and where the love of God was taught as an anchor, then I do believe you are not only a blessed individual, but your thoughts reflect those early years. A long way of saying that those words spoken over you, that atmosphere that allowed you to thrive, is key to what you think about yourself and others. My assumption is that the gift that those formative years gave you is evident in the way that you speak, think, and the kind of life you lead.
If, on the other hand, you grew up surrounded by negative words, and a family life that did not emulate love, understanding and encouragement, I have good news. As a believing woman your salvation is enough to make all the necessary corrections in your life. Whether you felt celebrated or tolerated, you are now in God’s family and His Word declares you are a new creation. As a new creation you now have the Holy Spirit working within you to manifest the mind of Christ. Guaranteed your thoughts will never be the same!
Walking with God changes us, and with maturity comes an understanding of those early trials. Although they were real, they can now be seen from a different perspective. A perspective that allows love, forgiveness and grace to be what makes us whole. Our new life is one where we have left the old behind, and are being transformed. That transformation will change our thoughts, renewing our mind, and aligning us with the mind of Christ.
I do not think that you have read anything new in this post, but I personally am grateful for the reminder. Each time my thoughts do not line up with God’s thoughts, then I want to make an immediate correction. When the Holy Spirit makes we aware of thoughts that are not of a life transforming nature, I listen, and my guess is that you do the same.
Romans 12:2 ESV Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.
