This morning has me reflecting on the last couple of days. We are currently doing what most of us will do at some point in our lives. Our parents have passed on, there is a sold sign out front, and now it is time to clean out their home.
This is never an easy task, emotionally or physically, but it must be done. For us, it is bringing back memories of times passed, laughter, holidays, picnics, and more as we revisit those days through the many objects that have been collected over a lifetime. Our loved ones are gone, but we are dealing with everything that they left behind.
I believe that as we go through the process of discarding, resorting, and evaluating the best way forward for everyone concerned, we are dealing with many important aspects of life.
How do we leave a generational legacy for our children, and our children’s children to 1,000 generations? I know it is not about possessions, no matter how valuable they are. It is about the intangible things that future generations need to remember. These are the things that will actually help shape them and allow them to make a difference in this world.
So, it is not objects, even if they are of the finest quality, that will carry the most weight to future generations. After all, there will be a day when material objects will be nothing but dust.
Instead, my greatest hope is that I would be remembered as a fine quality individual who loved God and expressed His love to everyone I met.
Our daughters are helping us sort through their grandparents things, and we naturally have been reminded of many days from their childhood. One thing they always looked forward to was the ice cream truck that would announce itself with music in the summer. Last night, we heard the truck and without a moments hesitation we were at the curb waiting for it to stop in front of the house. This is a new memory that I now have with grown daughters, that of eating ice cream with a chocolate dip and loving every minute!
Psalm 112:1-2 CSB Hallelujah! Happy is the person who fears the Lord, taking great delight in His commands. His descendants will be powerful in the land; the generation of the upright will be blessed.
