The other day I read something that Oswald Chambers wrote a long time ago. The words were simple and yet life changing. Oswald Chambers said, “When a man’s heart is right with God the mysterious utterances of the Bible are spirit and life to him. Spiritual truth is discernible only to a pure heart, not to a keen intellect. It is not a question of profundity of intellect, but of purity of heart.”
So, it is not the depth of your intellect, your IQ, or your college degree that allows you, or I, the ability to tap into the things of God. It is our pure heart. A heart that is open and steadfast. One that will settle for nothing less than all that God has to offer. A heart that is not governed by self-awareness, but by God awareness.
Purity is not something that we hear many believers talking about these days. In fact, it has become, even for some Christians, an outdated, irrelevant, and puritanical way of thinking that has no place anymore in our current culture that demands that our churches be seeker friendly. Yet, the Bible speaks very plainly about purity and its many benefits, and we know that our spirit, our soul, and our bodies are shaped by what is impure, corrupt, and contaminated. For this reason, we must intentionally seek what is sincere, honest and without guile.
Psalm 51:10 NKJV Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.
Psalm 73:26 NKJV My flesh and my heart may fail; but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.
