Are we defined by our right thinking?

My husband Jack is a deep thinker. He uses this innate gift to do exactly what Scripture implores us to do where it says in Proverbs 4:5, “Get wisdom, get understanding; don’t forget or turn away from the words.” Each day he is examining the Scriptures for their truth and then he is implementing those truths into his life.

The other day Jack shared a powerful truth with me when he said, “Anything counter to faith, hope, and love in our thinking does not come into agreement with God’s Word.” Instead, of faith, hope, and love, when we are out of agreement with God, it is about fear, guilt, and bitterness.

I think few of us could argue with this since we know what the Bible says about our thoughts, and how those thoughts direct our steps. It is exactly why we are told to guard our hearts for within them are the wellspring of life. From here we can now draw an obvious conclusion, and for me it is simple. Anything that is not life is death, so what we allow to remain in our hearts that does not bring life will bring death.

I know that this is a meaty way to start the morning, but actually it starts us out right! What it really means to me is that if we acknowledge this truth, and then we allow this agreement to shape our thinking, we will live life with transformative purpose. Purpose that will be obvious with every step we take.

As believing women we know that there is power in what we think and speak. If we are thinking right then the words that come out of our mouths will be right. They will line us up with God’s Word. They will not be words that bring judgement, but they will bring a commanding Biblical agreement.

This past weekend I had much joy in spending time with my two daughters. They are busy mothers who are rarely without their children, and although I love my six grandchildren dearly, I do love having time with their mothers without them. As we were in the marketplace, over a holiday weekend, it was crowded with women everywhere we went. We saw women clearly taking pleasure in being with people they loved, but we were aware that not every conversation was life giving. Somehow when women are relaxing with other woman they can easily forget where they are and the words that they speak.

The question for today causes us to look from a personal perspective. A perspective that is between us and God. God alone will point out areas in our lives where we need a revamping, and a rethinking. It will then be His Spirit that will help us get to where we need to be, for in truth, He alone knows the depth and breath of our hearts.

Philippians 4:8-9 CSB Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable—if there is any moral excellence and if there is anything praiseworthy--dwell on these things. Do what you have learned and received and heard from me, and seen in me, and the God of peace will be with you.

Can we distinguish between human wisdom and God's power?
