Another way to put that question might be, would you confidently follow you?
When I consider the question and all its implications I want my answer to be yes. I want to be someone who has recognized the importance of personal identity, and that who I am is a reflection of who I follow. Since I follow Jesus, who never had a mistaken identity, so too should my life take on clarity and purpose. By His example we can see how critical an impact this knowledge has on your life.
In reading the scripture 2 Corinthians 3:18, it becomes obvious to me who I want to see when I look in that mirror. It states, “But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord” NKJ. We are in a continual state of sanctification by the Holy Spirit for as long as we have this earthly life, which gives me tremendous peace.
Every individual has to recognize their personal identity and how that identity shapes their life, and we will all be different. Often how you see yourself will dictate what roles you gravitate towards, and those roles that are comfortable or necessary today may be different tomorrow. In my life I have found it reassuring where it states in Psalm 84: 7 “They go from strength to strength." There have been many times when I have reminded myself that I am a work in progress, and that it is ok.
Being intentional about whom we want to see when we look in the mirror is an important step for us all, one we do not want to miss.
