Is it healthy to rewrite history?

History is personal to us all, as it has a way of explaining our past, while defining and often shaping our future. I truly enjoy learning and researching things in the past, but not everything I come to understand gives me joy. Much that I learn is difficult to accept, and to understand. It is impossible to justify why certain events took place, why they had to play out the way they did, and how anything good could come from them.

History can’t be rewritten, no matter how much we regret what has happened, but I believe we can influence the future with our ideas, our actions, and our determination to live purposefully focused on what has eternal merit.

Although, we can not change the scenario, we can overcome those painful moments in our past, a past that has become part of our history. If we are open to seeing those events through the lens of healing, the healing perspective of God, that history that tormented us is now a life-changing testament to the sanctification process of the believer. This process that touches all areas of our lives, giving us the grace to walk the path of forgiveness, is the path leading into a future that is marked by who we are, and not by events that once tried to define us.

Revelation 21:4 NIV “ He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning, crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.”
