Are you afraid of getting your hands dirty?

Last year I was driving on a country road when I experienced a flat tire. Thankfully, I was able to make it to a nearby gas station, but unfortunately their air compressor was out of order. As I pondered my next step a young woman pulled up along side my car, assessed the situation, and offered to change the tire. It was kind of surreal, but at the same time so refreshing to meet a woman confident enough to take on the task. She knew how to change a tire and clearly had no issues getting her hands dirty. I have to say I was pretty impressed.

Today I happened to remember the incident and smiled. I was remembering how confidant this woman was and how she was quick to stop and help. I wondered how many times I have passed by someone who needed help, but I thought it was too hard, or assumed someone else more capable would come along.

My conclusion is that I need to be more perceptive to the needs of others, even when it is not convenient, or when it may be outside of my comfort level.

What I remember about this woman was her transparency. It was such a pleasure to meet her, and have a quick lesson in tire changing. I asked her if she did this kind of thing often, to which she replied yes. She said that initially she was hesitant to offer to change someone’s tire, but after doing it a few times she was so certain of her ability that now she always stopped. Her satisfaction was apparent when she finished, as it was obvious she was pleased that she had accomplished what she had set out to do. I can say I was pleased as well!
