I am someone who does not like weeds in my lawn or flower beds. When I see weeds I want to immediately eliminate them, and do whatever it takes to keep them out. This is because I am not a novice when it comes to the insidiousness of weeds. I was educated by my father many years ago in the proper way to protect the lawn from such an invasion.
The thing about weeds is that there is never just one. They appear to multiply extremely fast and before long they have taken over. It is like one comes and then in turn invites all its friends. Clearly you can see I am passionately opposed to weeds.
This now brings me to the point of this post. How well are we protecting ourselves from something that appears harmless, but which in fact is set to take over? Often what can seem of little concern turns out to be just the opposite, and quite suddenly becomes deeply rooted.
We might be seeing a change in attitude that is typically unlike us, or maybe our degree of patience has taken a turn. These may be just small indicators that something has tried to take root in our hearts. No matter how small those unwelcome weeds happen to be at the present, we don't want them taking up permanent residence. Better to recognize them for what they are and eliminate them now!
Proverbs 4:23 NIV Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.
