Do you pray for your country?

1 Timothy 2:1-2 NIV   I urge, then first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people- for kings, and for all those in authority; that we may lead peaceful and  quiet lives in all godliness and holiness.

On July 4, 1776 the Declaration of Independence was signed. It declared our freedom to govern ourselves. We would no longer be subject to British rule, or interference. That was 242 years ago and it remains a steadfast holiday in the United States. As Americans we are keen to memorialize the holiday with all manner of celebrations from parades, fireworks, family picnics, and numerous other activities attached to the 4th, but there are important elements, of the Declaration of Independence, that must not to be forgotten.

All men are created equal.

All men have basic human rights given to them by God.

The only reason to have a government is to protect these basic human rights, which Thomas Jefferson listed as "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness."

Government must be by the consent of the governed.

Of course, there are many more important aspects of this document that we revere, but I believe that these four are pivotal. Equality of all people, regardless of race or religion, freedom to worship and recognize our Creator, basic human rights that should guarantee all individuals with a certain quality of life, and a voice that carries weight in how we are governed.

When I asked the question, regarding praying for our country, I expected it to be a short post. But, as I really thought about all the people in America that need prayer, and who themselves need to be praying, I was impacted by how I am falling short of this exact exercise. I pray generically for the country, our president, etc, but this is not enough. I need to be coming to the Lord diligently seeking His favor for America and its people, of whom I am one.

Happy July 4th!

Do you believe in the power of God?

Can you let your yes be yes, and your no be no?
