My grandchildren inspire me every time I am in their company. They play and respond to each other making a joyful noise that is a pleasure to witness. Their enthusiasm for adventure is contagious as they express themselves in ways that many adults have forgotten.
Often as adults we remain too much in control, not wanting to expose ourselves to the personal scrutiny of others, even those that we trust. Feeling vulnerable and exposed we ignore the need that we sometimes have to share our feelings, but this is not so with children.
Children are by nature free to explore whatever comes across their path, for they don’t see the obstacles and boundaries that adults have put in place for themselves. We can learn so much from these little ones. I see my toddler grandson very focused until something new comes along that captures his attention. His natural tendency is to then drop what he is doing to take up the new thing before him.
I have decided to give myself permission to experience more of the playfulness I see my six grandchildren exhibit. I purposely decided to go to our neighborhood pool yesterday afternoon to swim and enjoy the last days of the lingering summer heat. As I swam I remembered all those summers spent with family and friends splashing on floats. It was a time when you had no thoughts of anything pressing, but just the sheer joy of playing in water. I was so thankful for those memories that came flooding in, and for the peace I experienced in just swimming and remembering the simple joys of childhood summers. Our pool closes for the season on Monday, so if you are looking for me, may I suggest you look towards the water!
Matthew 19:14 NLT But Jesus said, “Let the children come to Me. Don’t stop them! For the kingdom of Heaven belongs to those who are like these children.”
