Are we overlooking the voices of the children?

There was a program that aired some years ago called, “Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader?” I never watched the program, but it’s not difficult to get what it was all about. It was adults coming up against these elementary school aged children who seemed to have a lot of the answers. This just happened to come into my mind as I was reflecting on yesterday spent in the company of my eight year old granddaughter.

This granddaughter loves God. In fact, at the age of three when the pastor asked her why she wanted to be baptized she emphatically stated, “Because I love God!” So, yesterday when I asked her what her thoughts were on destiny she did not hesitate to respond. The scenario I put forth was a simple question. I asked her, “If you were leading a small group and the subject was destiny, what kinds of questions would you ask?” Below you will find the questions she gave me.

The first question she would ask the group, “Does everyone have a destiny?’ Next she would ask, “Can God change your destiny in the middle of your life?” Then she would ask, “Do unbelievers understand that they have a destiny?” Followed by, “Does destiny relate with your gifts and talents?”

Maybe you can imagine my delight in hearing this child respond to my question with these questions of her own. Did I mention that she has displayed love for the Holy Spirit since she was a toddler? We would hear her singing in her room, “Holy Spirit come to me” over and over again. It was impossible to have a dry eye, and what we witnessed was the beginning of a relationship that we have seen blossom and grow.

While we sat together yesterday I asked her to answer one of her questions. My question was, “Do unbelievers understand that they have a destiny?” Her response was exactly what I expected to hear. She replied, “Their destiny is to find Jesus.”

Phew! As far as this grandmother is concerned nothing more needs to be said. At the age of 8 this young child understands what the most important thing in life is!”

Matthew 19:13-15 CSB Then children were brought to Jesus for Him to place His hands on them and pray, but the disciples rebuked them. Jesus said,”Leave the children alone, and don’t try to keep them from coming to Me, because the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.” After placing His hands on them, He went on from there.

Does the voice of Jesus ring loud and clear?
