There is a very familiar saying that we have all heard that says, “Follow Your Heart.” Until today I don’t know that I connected the two when I thought of obeying God, or doing what I want to do.
I want to be at a point where obedience to God and my desires are one and the same. I do know that this is not always the easiest thing to do. Challenges certainly exist that want nothing more than to knock us off course. Often we pose the biggest challenge to that place of obedience. We don’t always trust what our heart wants us to do, and instead we would like to apply our mental reasoning to lead the way. As Christians this can be a slippery slope.
Last night, I was in the company of believers where our discussion revolved around having a face to face with Jesus, and what that looks like when we allow that time with Him to be our priority. My conclusion is not complicated.
The more time we spend in seeking to know our Jesus the better we will know Him. As my husband likes to say, “This is not rocket science.” Even children know that the more time they spend with a friend the better aquatinted they will be with that person. As adults, we definitely understand how this works. Spend enough time with someone and before long you will be finishing each other’s sentences.
Ultimately, we want the voices in our head to line up with our heart. We want to know that we are following God first before we agree to anything, or anyone else. This takes discipline and training. It takes knowing how the voice of God sounds, and what words He uses, so that we won’t be fooled. It means being so familiar with God’s Word that we know immediately when a voice is trying to speak error.
When you know truth, you stand in that truth, even if everything around you is trying to tell you otherwise. It is giving that heart of God within us the permission to override thoughts that are counter to His ways!
Psalm 139:1-6 CSB Lord, You have searched me and know me. You know when I sit down and when I stand up; You understand my thoughts from far away. You observe my travels and my rest; You are aware of all my ways. Before a word is on my tongue, You know all about it, Lord. You have encircled me; You have placed Your hand on me. This extraordinary knowledge is beyond me.
