We know that the world is a dark place, but we also know that we have an obligation to shine our light into that dark place. If we neglect to shine our light when we have the opportunity, then we are not using our light to its fullest potential.
Clearly, if we know that we can help, but we choose not to, then we are like a light that has lost its own way. We are a candle that has no wick, and therefore useless to many that need to see even a sliver of light. For some, it is that sliver of light what will be enough to lead them out of their dark pit.
The other day I read where someone said, “Alright, already. We know the world is in the dark, so let’s stop repeating it and actually do something to bring in the light!” Isn’t that wonderful?
I know that we are all familiar with the Scripture in Matthew that cautions us not to hide our light from others, but to allow it be seen by many. This particular word is excellent as it confirms that we are a light, and that we need to be the light that is seen so others can come to it. Jesus spoke it very plainly when He said, “You are the light of the world.”
As lights we give not only hope, but we bring influence into dark places.
Matthew 5:14-16 CSB “You are the light of the world. A city situated on a hill cannot be hidden. No one lights a lamp and puts it under a basket, but rather on a lampstand, and it gives light for all who are in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.”
