Are we speaking life with our words?

The other day I became very aware of how we can be calling negative things into our lives. I know none of us wants to entertain the idea that we may be responsible for what is happening to us, but I think evidence may prove that we do bear some responsibility.

I think that most of us would agree that if you call an individual a loser long enough there is a good chance that their life will play out in exactly that way. Sadly, they may not be able to shake those words that were spoken over them, words that others were using to really pronounce death and not life. The death may not be physical death, but death to success in life, be it in personal relationships, family, career, or even financial opportunities. When a person starts identifying more with being a loser, than a winner, they will begin to believe that they are exactly what others have spoken.

The power we have in the words that we speak is very real, and for this reason we are told to guard our tongue, for life and death are in the power of the tongue. This was a teaching that I learned many years ago, and it has stayed very close to my heart. For this reason I want to be a person who blesses with my words, not someone who curses another by casually speaking what does not edify.

I have a simple exercise that I believe gets right to the core of this issue. The questions that I ask myself will quickly keep my mouth, or should I say heart, operating in a way that honors God.

Am I speaking a miracle or a misery?

Am I speaking poverty or plenty?

Am I speaking faith or unbelief?
