How would you define meaning?

Someone recently wrote that beauty in itself had no benefit if it did not speak of meaning as well. I read it yesterday afternoon, and it immediately got my attention.  Any thoughts?

I began thinking of small things that I consider beautiful, but that might only have value to me. Like the pottery that I collect from talented individuals that I have met, although interesting to me, they really serve no function. And that brings up another question. Why am I letting something that was made to have a function/purpose sit idle on a shelf? Answer; I just like looking at them and that is certainly ok!

To get serious with this I look to the dictionary and find words like significance, interpretation, value, worth, understanding, and substance. These are the ones I prefer, so I target them first. I like the word meaning as it speaks of important characteristics of purpose, and I love purpose.

My days are spent keying in on purpose, whether it be for a moment or for a greater good. We all have things that have to be done. Then we have those things that we chose to do because they bring meaning to our lives. Spending time with the people we love, pursing our passions, or just doing an activity that makes us feel good. These are moments in our days that bring us joy and satisfaction. Would we classify them as beautiful?  I believe I would and I imagine you might as well.

At the end of the day we have to decide what brings meaning to the days we live. I want to look back and see the good fruit that has grown out of the choices I have made, and if I can do that then I will be happy.

Matthew 25:23 NIV "His master replied, 'Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master's happiness!'
