We live in a fast pace, often menacing world that is changing very quickly. When I reflect on this I wonder if my parents felt the same way, or if this is new to the time in which we live. I do believe that they were less affected by the global stage compared to our days. For many of us it is something we seem unable to escape, and it has become part of the fabric of our lives.
Either way I believe we certainly are shaped by the events swirling around each day. Some are major events and some minor, but all have the potential to bring about an element of anxiety if we think on them too long.
Listening to a favorite news program on my way home the other evening and hearing of the events that were trending this past week could be overwhelming. There is so much that is not within our control, but somehow we have to keep the right perspective. When my heart goes out to women and children in a distant country and I can not practically make a difference in their lives, I know where I can find peace. It may be volunteering at a local shelter, or giving my time to women who have come out of desperate situations. What is important is that I choose to be shaped by listening to a mothers story, or mentoring a young woman who is in need of guidance and a friend.
Mark 13:7 NIV "When you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come."
John 14:27 NLT "I am leaving you with a gift-peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don't be troubled or afraid."
