Are you offended by the millennials?

If you are one of the boomers, then a millennial son or daughter is likely close to your heart. I have two daughters who are part of this generation, and they truly make me proud. I am guilty of using them as the standard for their peers, but this is not always fair. Just as for my generation, we were vastly different in our choices, so it is true for their counterparts. To lump them all together is to disregard their many gifts and talents.

I know many young people who represent the very best of this generation who are caring and motivated to do good. They are deeply attracted to service professions where it is more about helping others.

Another point to remember is these individuals are inspired by technology, and they have driven the industry in a direction that benefits many. They are the connectivity generation as they influence the world through social media. Much of their strength lies in a willingness to test new ideas, as they continually more forward. They are courageous and steadfast in their commitment to live life on their terms, concerned more about the quality of the work place and how they can better integrate time to develop relationships.

Many of our parents tried to control or shape us, and we resented this interference when it came to our personal choices. Are we guilty of doing the same? It is easy to judge instead of working towards a better life we can all enjoy.

I know people within my generation who have viewpoints counter to what I believe, but I don’t disregard everyone. The same needs to be true when I look at a generation that is coming into itself, that I don’t generalize them all because I disagree with a few.

Matthew 7:1 NIV  Do not judge, or you too will be judged.
