Who sets your pace?

We are all driven to get done what we feel is either important to us or someone else. The things in our lives that we are passionate about can drive us in a direction that is easy, which we like. However, when we are expected to do things, that we do not necessarily want to do, our desire to complete them may be lacking. So, the pace we choose for what we want is likely not the pace we choose for what we don’t.

My purpose, and the pace in which I pursue it, must be in keeping with God. My husband said the other day, “ Lord, if I am getting ahead of you grab my belt and pull me back, and if I am behind, I want You to once again grab my belt, but this time pull me up.” God is a master at timing and completely reliable, so if we give Him permission He will keep us focused.

I think that there are times when we set our pace in conjunction with awaiting those further instructions. For when we know where we are going it is easy to get engaged and start moving in that direction. On the other hand, if that direction is still unclear, then we may find that our pace has slowed down to an actual stop.

My desire is always to go when the Lord says go, and to do so immediately. This being the case, my pace will and must be set by the go that the Lord has put before me, and in keeping with the Holy Spirit. With these in place I know that I can trust that I will not be too fast or too slow!

Proverbs 16:9 NKJV A man’s heart plans his way, but the Lord directs his steps.
